It’s all in the Details

Posted on
Last weekend was all about details in the Rose house.  Not the most glamourous (not that our usual weekend of painting is at all glamourous) and exciting things, but things that when you add them all up, they make a big difference.

For instance, Chris took a razor blade (his new favorite tool-I kid you not he has about 50 different sizes with different handles and different angles) to the floors to get some black gunk off.

Meanwhile I was in the kitchen organizing the cupboards, something Chris had been begging me to do for weeks.  Our kitchen is fine for now, and if we never get around to remodeling it, we would be still be happy and love our house to bits…that being said, I really don’t like our kitchen.  The cupboards are short so nothing tall fits, there is a 3 inch gap on either side of the stove that my pepper keeps falling into, and there’s no where for my pots and pans.  I have to heave my huge, heavy cast iron skillet almost above my head and angle it a certain way so it will fit into the cupboard.  I almost knocked myself out doing this the other day.

This is why I have not wanted to unpack my kitchen, because nothing fits, and (in my hopes and dreams) it’s only temporary so what’s the point?  The point, as Chris let me know ever so sweetly, is that even if we do remodel the kitchen, it will be another 7 months, at least, before we even start, so it’s better to have the cast iron skillet in a cupboard, even if it’s in an annoying spot, than to have it sitting on the floor.  Touché.  You win this time Mr. Rose.

The most impressive thing we did this weekend was to tackle the window and door trim in the dining room.  If you’ve read even one of our posts, you’ll know that we are not a fan of painting.  You probably think we’re whiners, which, to be fair, we kind of are, but on the flip side of that is the fact that we are painting almost every square inch of this bloody house (how many window panes did I say we have, like 225?), and it’s not like it was in really nice condition when we started.

Being an 83 year old foreclosure that had been vacant for over 6 months before we bought it, during which time Santa Barbara had 2 of the nastiest fires in recent history, there is layer upon layer of dirt, paint, and ash.  Even after cleaning the window sills they were still nasty, and beige.  Which brings me to another digression, who on God’s green earth chooses to paint walls white and trim beige?!?  I mean REALLY.  Who?  (I’m sorry if you are one of those people.  I will still like you, but that won’t change the fact that you have bad taste when it comes to wall colors)

Here’s a visual so you can get an idea of what we’re dealing with here:

We only have one window left and the dining room will be TOTALLY FINISHED!!!!  Except for the floors, which we will need to polish wish some fancy cleaner that Chris bought and a little elbow grease.  One room almost down, 7 to go…and the decks…and the front yard…and the back yard…will we ever finish?  Stay tuned.
